Choosing a Noseband
The noseband changes how a bridle works more than any other part.
- Hanoverian or crank nosebands sit low and help keep the mouth quiet.
- Grackle or figure eight nosebands are popular for jumping and eventing.
- Flash nosebands add a lower strap to stop the horse crossing its jaw.
- Anatomic headpieces are cut away around the ears to relieve poll pressure.

Double and Weymouth Bridles
A double bridle carries two bits and two sets of reins and is used in advanced dressage and some show classes. Find the bits in double bridle bits.
Fitting a Bridle
Allow two fingers under the cheekbone for the noseband, a fist width at the throatlash and a browband that does not pull the headpiece into the ears. The bit should create one or two wrinkles at the corner of the mouth.

Can I use a dressage bridle for jumping?
Yes for training, as long as it fits and suits your horse. Dressage bridles often have wider, padded nosebands and a more formal look. In competition, check your discipline rules on nosebands and browbands, as some classes restrict styles such as grackles or flash attachments.
