Types of Halter
The right halter depends on how you use it and how long it stays on the horse.
- Nylon halters are strong, washable and suit everyday handling.
- Padded and sheepskin halters protect the nose and poll when travelling.
- Leather halters suit showing and will give under extreme strain. See leather halters.
- Rope halters give clear feel for groundwork. See rope halters.
Halter Safety
Never leave a horse unattended in a rope halter or a nylon halter without a breakaway point. For turnout and floating, choose a halter with a leather headpiece or a breakaway section that releases if the horse gets caught.
Sizing and Fit
The noseband should sit two fingers below the cheekbone with room for two fingers underneath. Foals and miniatures need dedicated small sizes, as a loose halter can slip over the eyes or catch a hoof.
Leads, Covers and Parts
Pair your halter with a lead from lead ropes, or a longer line from training ropes. Fleece covers stop rubs on sensitive horses, and spare headpieces and clips extend the life of a good halter.
Around the Stable
Riding gear is in horse bridles. Turnout extras include fly masks and horse bibs. Brushes are in grooming brushes, and leather care products in leather care. Western halters and roping gear are with stock and western tack.
