Choosing a Western Pad
Match the pad to the saddle shape and how your horse is built.

Thickness and Fit
A thicker pad is not always better. Too much padding under a saddle that already fits can make it tight across the withers. The pad should extend a few centimetres past the saddle on every side and be pulled up into the gullet before girthing.
Liners and Shims
Liners add a thin, washable layer under a pad or blanket. Shims slot into pockets to fill gaps behind the shoulder or under the cantle, a useful fix for horses that change shape through the season.

Most western pads are around 30 by 30 inches for a standard saddle, with 32 inch pads for longer skirts and junior pads for youth saddles. Round skirt saddles suit round pads. The pad should show a few centimetres all around the saddle without bunching under the rigging or cinch.
What are shims in a saddle pad for?
Shims are thin inserts that slide into pockets in the pad to fill hollows behind the shoulder or lift the back of the saddle. They help a saddle sit level on horses that are building muscle or have changed shape. They are not a substitute for a saddle fitter on badly fitting saddles.
Felt or wool western saddle pad?
Felt pads are firm, hold their shape and are easy to brush clean, which suits stock work and campdrafting. Wool and wool blend pads breathe well and wick sweat on long rides. Many riders combine a felt pad with a thin cotton liner they can wash regularly between rides.
